On the second night, the audience was first treated to a blistering set by free jazz behemoths Ivan Mazuze, Texito Langa and Gorm Helfjord – a set whose intensity was matched only by the playfulness of the musicians, with drummer Langa launching cymbals up and playing them while airborne, and the trio miming for a minute in complete silence, creating an almost unbearable tension before launching into their final crash.
Later that evening, the heat inside the small Intimate Theatre inspired the Norwegian Omenås/Skarbø duo to opt to play their set outside, in the parking lot – which turned out to be apt setting for their oddball collection of jerrybuilt percussive devices, xylophones, trumpets and melodica’s.
